Sitar making in Sonoghor

On the way to Mastuj, about three hours from Chitral is a beautiful village called Sonoghor. From this village you can view the snow clad feature of Buni Zom, 6,551m.

This village is also famous for sitar making and almost all the sitars of Chitral are produced here.

The body of the sitar is made from mulberry tree. When the tree is cut down it is soaked in the water for about three days and is scraped when still wet. After the hollow of the belly is made it is shut with the lid and the neck is attached. A sitar can be made in three days.

A renowned poet called Ziarat Khan Zerak has his grave in this village and naturally the villagers love to sing and dance. A famous musical group called Sona Club has its base here.
